International students from the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, New York, USA visit Fukushima Medical University (July 4, 2025)
¡¡Benjamin NIKITIN and George KRAMER, both first-year medical students at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, have started a three-week rotation at Fukushima Medical University. Ben and George will be working on assigned research topics in the Department of Radiation Health Management (supervised by Professor Masaharu TSUBOKURA).
¡¡Their first day began with an orientation session at FMU's Global Exchange Center (GEX), where they met with GEX Executive Director Shunichi YAMASHITA. After orientation, they participated in a campus and hospital tour organized by Professor Kenneth NOLLET (Radiation Medical Science Center for the Fukushima Health Management Survey). Lunch followed, with a chance for thoughtful exchanges with 9 FMU medical students. In the evening, a welcome party was held by local student members of IFMSA, the International Federation of Medical Students' Associations.※1
¡¡On their second and third days, Mount Sinai students attended lectures and visited university and hospital facilities to learn more about FMU's unique initiatives and research. During their visit to the Radiation Medical Science Center for the Fukushima Health Management Survey, students were briefed by Director Seiji YASUMURA about the organization and outcomes of the Survey's various components. Subsequently, they visited FMU's Radiation Disaster Medical Center, where Professor Arifumi HASEGAWA (Department of Radiation Disaster Medicine) led a discussion on the challenges of nuclear disaster medical response and communication during the Great East Japan Earthquake and its aftermath, including the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant accident. At the Advanced Clinical Research Center, students toured our cyclotron facility and attended a lecture by Associate Professor Yukinobu WASHIYAMA on research related to radioisotopes used for diagnostic and therapeutic pharmaceuticals. Finally, they began their fruitful research projects at our university.
※1.IFMSA (International Federation of Medical Students' Association) was established in 1951 as an international federation of medical students from around the world. It currently includes about 140 medical student organizations in more than 100 countries.
IFMSA is a valuable place for students to "broaden their perspectives as international medical professionals," and our students are actively learning and growing through local contributions and international activities.
The International Federation of Medical Students' Associations Japan (IFMSA-Japan) is the Japanese National Member Organization (NMO) of the International Federation of Medical Students' Associations. REFERENCE: Japan Medical Association Journal 52(5): 361-363, 2009.
