Message from FMU’s President and Chief Executive
Standing with the people of Fukushima and co-creating a society of the future
— 150 Years Since the Founding of Fukushima Prefecture, 15 Years Since the Earthquake: The University’s Deepening Mission —
To the residents of Fukushima Prefecture and stakeholders in Japan and abroad, please accept my sincere greetings as we welcome a new academic year.
Today, the heavy responsibility of steering Fukushima Medical University brings a fundamental principle close to my heart.
As a 1990 graduate of this university, I have trained and practiced as a surgeon in Fukushima, feeling the significance of every resident’s life. Service on the front lines of medical practice teaches us that the foundation of healthcare lies in people and the lives we are entrusted to protect.
It has been 150 years since the establishment of Fukushima Prefecture, and 15 years since the Great East Japan Earthquake.
The paths we have walked have by no means been easy. Yet, with every challenge, the people of Fukushima have joined hands and moved forward with unity and purpose, one step at a time.
We now stand at a major turning point.
As our university has thus far served as the ultimate referral center for medical care within the prefecture, we must continue to evolve into a core hub that guides healthcare and society into a brighter future through education, research, and clinical care.
We will steadily advance the development of the Futaba Regional Core Hospital, which will serve as a central pillar of healthcare delivery in the Futaba area. At the same time, we will promote, on a university-wide basis, the Fukushima Model for Sustainable Human Resource Development and Physician Deployment—an initiative designed to encourage younger generations to build their futures in Fukushima and to cultivate a strong commitment to supporting community healthcare.
Furthermore, in the redevelopment of our affiliated hospital, we will create new value by integrating advanced medical care with preventive medicine—including the establishment of a “Disease Prevention Center” (tentative name) with health screening capabilities—as a project symbolizing a “university hospital that adapts and evolves with changing circumstances.” We are committed to realizing this new value creation by redefining our healthcare resources beyond the traditional framework of receiving people after they get sick to being a lifelong health partner for the people of Fukushima.
Rather than remaining confined to the closed worlds of a campus or workplace, we will promote multiprofessional collaboration through global perspectives and dissolving barriers that isolate departments and professions. We’ll bring Fukushima’s knowledge to the world, and the world’s knowledge to Fukushima. This circulation of knowledge is an unwavering banner that we hold high.
“Opening the Future Through Co-creation and the Circulation of Knowledge”
Co-create. Circulate knowledge. Open the future.
This is more than a slogan.
By bringing together all of our university’s knowledge -the School of Medicine, the School of Nursing, the School of Health Sciences, the Specialized Course in Midwifery, and the Graduate School- and working together with local communities, we will co-create healthcare and harmonious society for a new era, right here in Fukushima. This is our unwavering resolve as we move forward as a comprehensive medical university rooted in the region yet competing on a global stage.
This spring marks a major turning point in our history.
The future is at hand.
Starting today, right here in Fukushima, we are moving forward step by step, hand in hand, with the people we serve.
Together, let’s imagine tomorrow’s Fukushima Medical University today, and build a future for Fukushima where everyone can live with peace of mind.
We sincerely welcome your continued understanding and warm support in the year ahead.
