JST Sakura Science Exchange Program Begins
— MNUMS Faculty and Students Learn about Community-Based Rehabilitation —
As part of the Sakura Science Exchange Program organized by the Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST), Fukushima Medical University (FMU) welcomed faculty members and students from the Mongolian National University of Medical Sciences (MNUMS) and launched a program exploring the social role of physical therapy in disaster response, community healthcare, and para sports, as well as the international sharing of related knowledge.
At the opening ceremony and orientation held on August 29, 2026, participants received an overview of the program's objectives, training activities, and key points to keep in mind, deepening their understanding of the program ahead.
Later that day, the participants traveled to Kagamiishi Town for field training, where they observed FMU's functional assessments of older residents. Through assessments of walking ability, muscle strength, balance, and other aspects of physical function, they learned about community-based rehabilitation initiatives that promote healthy aging and help prevent the need for long-term care.
The following day, August 30, lectures were held at Fukushima Ekimae Campus on rehabilitation in Japan and on the current state of healthcare and rehabilitation in Fukushima Prefecture. The participants then toured the practical training rooms and explored a range of facilities and equipment firsthand.
Next, three fourth-year students from the School of Health Sciences presented their graduation research, followed by a lively question-and-answer session with the participants. During hands-on practice with various assessment methods, students from both universities worked in groups to develop their assessment skills and deepen their connections through discussion.
The program continued through September 3. Through a series of training and exchange activities, FMU shared its expertise in community healthcare and rehabilitation while strengthening relationships that will support future international exchange, collaborative research, and human resource development.
