Department of Surgery 2
Introduction
Fifty years have passed since the late Dr. Shinichiro Endo was inaugurated as the first professor and the history of our Chair began in 1952. Dr. Rikiya Abe became the next professor in 1985, and Dr. Seiichi Takenoshita has been a professor and a chairman since 1999.

The main theme of studies and researches in our Chair has been surgical oncology. We have done a lot of basic and clinical researches on various cancers, and have been making efforts to treat patients using the most recent knowledge and technology.

In our Department, there are three clinical teams with specialties of gastroenterological surgery, breast surgery, endocrine surgery, and respiratory surgery. They cover the diagnosis and the treatment of various malignant tumors, laying, great emphasis on patient-centered care.
Research
Recent advance in genetic engineering and molecular biology has shown that cancer is a disease caused by various kinds of abnormal genes. Our Chair has long explored this field by investigating cancer using molecular biological techniques. Cancer from many organs share a variety of biochemical and genetical characteristics, which provides us with valuable clues to address the questions "what is cancer?" or "how can we apply the molecular biological results to clinical medicine?" We have multi-institutional ties with representative laboratories for cancer research in Japan, Asia, US, and Europe. Many collaborative projects are in progress to answer the above stated questions about cancer.
Education
The education of surgical medicine for students consists of lectures and clinical practices. General and particular lectures are given on the fourth grade and clinical practices, named "Bed Side Learning (BSL)" are prepared on the fifth grade. On the senior grade, students can choose advanced clinical practices of surgery as an optional course.
Besides the surgical education for medical students, we perform academic activities such as introducing recent medical technology to a citizen of Fukushima Prefecture and joining in a lot of medical conferences to present our studies.
