Development of the novel phantom for MR-only simulation in radiation therapy.
Collaboration in Japan
Project Year:2018.04 - 2020.03
, Member: Saotome Kousaku
In planning radiotherapy for prostate cancer, using Magnetic resonance (MR), which provides better contrast in soft tissue than computed tomography (CT) images will be able to concentrate to the dose of radiation to malignant tumors and reduce damage to surrounding normal tissue. However, in order to create a radiation therapy planning based on MR images alone, the dose distribution has not yet been verified. In this study, we propose to search for and validate the materials that can be used for the phantoms.

Neural dynamics in functional recovery training
Collaboration in Japan
Project Year:2016.04 - 2020.03
, Member: Matsushita Akira
For patients with hemiplegia and spasticity due to stroke, an exercise program with a HAL single joint was performed twice a week for 2 weeks after botulinum treatment. In addition to the effect of improving the spasticity of the biceps brachii by botulinum treatment, the tendency of improving the spasticity of the antagonistic muscle, triceps brachii, also was shown. The range of motion of the elbow joint, and flexion and extension torque (force) tended to increase. Thus, although this method was to perform a simple single joint exercise in a short period, it was possible to show the changes associated with ADL expansion.
A large touch screen and mixed reality devices were used in the development of a device that facilitates upper limb flexion and extension movements and simultaneously measures the movements. In both cases, problems with accuracy and stability of the devices were found out. -
Fixation Method and Image Acquisition for fMRI during stepping
Collaboration in Japan
Project Year:2013.04 - 2015.03
, Member: SAOTOME Kousaku
The trunk fixation method and data acquisition parameters for functional MRI during stepping were investigated. The measurements of head velocities during stepping by using motion capture system and fMRI acquisitions were performed to twelve healthy volunteers. The head velocity during stepping decreased statistically significant difference by using the trunk fixation method. Moreover, the motor areas of the legs were represented on fMRI activation map in every case and the deactivation areas, which caused by motion artifact, were smaller in some cases. However, the trunk fixation method could not reduce deactivation areas in other cases. We could theoretically moderate the image acquisition parameters to match the data acquisition time with the smaller head velocity time. Further investigations need in future work.
