Department of Clinical Laboratory Medicine
Introduction
The Division of Clinical Laboratories in Fukushima Medical College Hospital was born in 1960 and the Department of Clinical Laboratory Medicine was established in 1995. Faculty staffs are as follows: a professor and a chairman Hiroshi YOSHIDA, M.D. an associate professor Yutaka MIURA Ph.D. and instructors Toshihiko NAGAI Ph.D. and Yuji IMAFUKU, M.D. Duties of the staff members are education of medical students, postgraduate students and medical laboratory technologists, consultations to medical doctors, management of Clinical Laboratories and research works. These have been performed by close collaborations with laboratory technologists.
Research
Our research interests ranges widely in the various fields of laboratory medicine. The recent investigations are focused on the autoantibodies including antinuclear antibodies, rheumatoid factor, antineutrophil antibodies and so on, sampling or preanalytical issues including antigenicity of Hb, K-flux of erythrocytes, detergents-effects, EDTA-effects, and so on, and quality control and standardization of laboratory tests. Researches and evaluations of newly developed laboratory tests are carried out by close collaboration with medical technologists in the Clinical Laboratory Sections. Those fruits are mainly reported in annual meetings of Japanese Society of Laboratory Medicine, Japanese Society of Laboratory Automation, and also in various international meetings and published in academic journals.
Education
The lecture course of Clinical Laboratory Medicine for 4th grade medical students includes the general aspects of clinical laboratory medicine, theory and clinical significance of fundamental laboratory tests. Practical trainings of laboratory medicine as bedside learning (BSL) are carried out for 5th (primary course) and for 6th (advanced course) year students. They include blood sampling, urinalysis, blood analyses, bacteriological and physiological tests. Students also learn the clinical laboratory system including quality assurance and management of our hospital.
We also take part in the education of medical technology students and postgraduate education for medical technologists.
